The picture on my shared links still comes from my old website
When someone shares a link to your site, the post usually shows a picture. Your page names that picture in a part of the page your visitors do not see. After a move, your pages look right, but that hidden note can still name your old website.
The prompt
“My site [my site] has moved to bernard. Check whether the pictures on my shared links still come from my old website. Show me what would change before you change anything, then move them when I say yes.”
Signed in, Get my prompt fills in your site for you. Otherwise press Copy and fill in the [bracketed] parts. First time? Connect your AI to bernard once: Use your own AI (opens in a new tab).
While the old site is running, you see no problem. When it closes, those pictures disappear and your shared links show a blank card or no picture at all.
What to ask for
Ask Bernard to move your share pictures. It does this in two steps:
- It looks first. Bernard goes through your pages and tells you which ones still use a picture from your old site. Nothing changes.
- It moves them when you say yes. Each picture is copied to your site once, even if many pages use it, and each page then points at the copy. This goes into your draft for you to approve.
The pictures keep their format and size, so a card looks as it did before. Your storage allowance applies to the copies. On a large site, Bernard works through your pages in a few steps.
When to do it
Do this before your old site closes, and if you can, before you move your domain. See Leave WordPress without breaking my email or losing my site for where it fits in a move.
Questions people ask
- Will this change my live site straight away?
- No. Bernard first shows you what would change, and changes nothing. When you say yes, the pictures are copied to your site and the pages change in your draft. Your live site changes only when you approve a publish.
- What if one picture will not copy?
- That page keeps its old picture, and Bernard tells you which one. The other pictures still move. Ask for the right picture, or ask Bernard to use a different one.
- My pictures are also on another service. Will those move?
- No. Only pictures on your own old website move. Bernard lists any on another service and leaves them as they are. A picture on your old platform’s own service can stop working when you close that account, so tell Bernard which ones to keep, and it can copy them across with your approval.
- I have already moved my domain. Is it too late?
- It may be. Once your domain points at bernard, your old site no longer answers at that address, so a picture that was only there cannot be copied from it. Bernard tells you which ones failed. If you still have the old files, you can upload them, and Bernard can use those.
- Can I undo it?
- Yes, before you publish. Ask Bernard to undo the last change, and the pages go back as they were. On a large site the work is done in a few steps, and each undo takes back one step. The copied pictures stay in your library.
