Can bernard make an animation that is not in the library?

bernard’s library covers most of what people ask for (see What animations can bernard add?). When it does not, describe what you want in your own words, and bernard can write a new animation for you.

The prompt

“Make my [logo, headline or photo] [what it should do, e.g. turn once, slowly, when the page opens]. If the library has something close, show me that first.”

How it works

  1. Tell bernard what should move and how: “make my logo turn once, slowly, when the page opens”.
  2. bernard looks for something close in the library first. If there is one, it offers you that.
  3. If nothing fits, bernard writes the animation and checks it before it goes into your draft. It reads the code against its rules (see Is it safe to let bernard add code to my site?). Code that fails a check does not go on your page.
  4. Open the preview and watch it. A new animation is checked by reading its code, not yet by running it, so the preview is where you see it work.
  5. If you like it, publish it like any change.

When it cannot pass

When a check fails, bernard fixes the code and checks it again. If new code on your site fails the checks three times in 24 hours (new animations and any other code of your own count together), bernard stops and tells you so in plain words: it could not make it pass yet, and bernard will look at it overnight. The rest of what you asked for still gets done.

A request that stops here is usually one that would push the page about while someone reads, reach outside its own part of the page, or contact another website. The usual answer is the nearest animation from the library.

Questions people ask

Who decides whether it goes live?
You do. The new animation goes into your draft, and you publish it like any other change. The publish is your approval: nothing reaches your visitors before it.
What if bernard cannot make it?
bernard fixes the code and checks it again. If new code on your site fails the checks three times in 24 hours, bernard stops and tells you: “I could not make this pass bernard’s checks yet. bernard will look at it overnight.” Then it finishes the rest of what you asked for.
Why would a check stop it?
Usually because the idea would push the page about while someone reads, reach outside its own part of the page, or contact another website. bernard can offer the nearest animation from the library instead.
Is it checked as carefully as the library?
Not yet. Library animations are also tried in a real browser by bernard’s own tests. A new one is checked by reading its code, so watch it in the preview before you publish.
Is this on for everyone?
Not yet. A new animation written just for you is switched on for some accounts so far, while bernard finishes extra safety work it wants in place first. Ask bernard whether yours has it. On every other site, bernard offers the nearest animation from its library, which works everywhere.
