Is it safe to let bernard add code to my site?
bernard checks code before it goes on a page. That is true whether the code is an animation from bernard’s library, a new animation bernard writes for you, or other code of your own (see Can I run my own code on my site?). Code that fails a check is not added to your draft.

“What does bernard check before it adds an animation or other code to my site, and what does it not check yet?”

Safe and private: every piece of code
bernard reads the code and checks that:
- it does not load code from other websites, except libraries on bernard’s approved list;
- it talks only to the places it names (most animations talk to nothing);
- it does not send anything until a visitor does something, such as pressing a button;
- it does not use tricks to recognise or follow your visitors.
Kind to your visitors and light: animations
For an animation, bernard also checks, by reading the code, that:
- it does not contact other websites or remember anything about visitors;
- it changes only its own part of the page, never the rest of it, and never rewrites your words or pictures;
- it is small, so your page stays quick;
- it moves things only by sliding, fading or scaling them, so nothing on the page is pushed about while it plays.
Tried in a real browser: bernard’s library
Every animation in bernard’s library is also run in a real browser by bernard’s own tests. They check that each one:
- stops for visitors who ask for less motion (Why do my animations not move for some visitors?);
- leaves your words showing even if the animation never runs;
- stays inside its own part of the page;
- rests in a tab nobody is looking at;
- makes nothing on the page jump;
- works on a phone without making the page scroll sideways.
A new animation written just for you does not get this browser run yet. Its checks read the code, so look at it in your preview before you publish.
What stays with you
You decide what goes live. Code goes into your draft, and nothing reaches your visitors until you publish. If you are not sure about something, ask bernard to explain it in plain words first.
Questions people ask
- Who decides what goes live?
- You do. Code goes into your draft. Nothing reaches your visitors until you publish, and the publish is your approval.
- What happens if a check fails?
- The code does not go on your page. bernard fixes it and checks it again. If new code on your site fails three times in 24 hours, bernard stops, tells you it could not make it pass yet, and looks at it overnight.
- Are library animations and new code checked the same way?
- Both are checked against the same rules before they reach your draft. Library animations are also tried in a real browser by bernard’s own tests. New code written for you is checked by reading it, not yet by running it, so watch it in the preview.
- Is this on for everyone?
- Animations from the library, yes: they work on every bernard site. New code written just for you, such as a bespoke animation or a calculator, is switched on for some accounts so far, while bernard finishes extra safety work it wants in place first. Ask bernard whether yours has it.
