My video captions have a wrong word or American spelling

Automatic captions are very good, but now and then they mishear a word - “Light darkness” where you said “Like darkness” - or spell a word the American way when your business writes British English. You don’t have to re-record the video or pay to transcribe it again. Bernard can correct the words that are there.

The prompt

“In my [course name] course, change [the wrong words, e.g. “Light darkness”] to [the right words, e.g. “Like darkness”] in the captions, and change these US spellings to UK English: [behavior, crib, organization, recognize]. Show me what will change first.”

What to ask for

  • “In my sleep module, change ‘Light darkness’ to ‘Like darkness’ in the captions.”
  • “Change these to UK spelling in every video of my course: behavior, crib, organization, recognize.”
  • “Fix ‘crib’ to ‘cot’ in the captions of the settling lesson only.”

You can give Bernard a whole list in one go - up to 20 corrections at a time - and name one lesson, one video or the whole course.

What changes

The correction reaches every place your words appear, together:

  1. The captions learners switch on in the player.
  2. The transcript beside the video, including the words that highlight as you speak.
  3. The search over your lessons (Where do I say that? Search inside my own lessons), so a learner who types the right spelling finds the moment.

Every timing stays exactly as it was. Nothing is transcribed again, so it costs no transcription minutes.

You see it before it happens

Bernard first tells you how many places would change and shows you a few captions before and after. Only when you say yes does he make the change, and it is live for learners at once - there is nothing to publish. If you change your mind, ask him to undo the last correction and the old words come back.

Subtitles in other languages (Subtitles in another language - French, German, Spanish) are left as they are. Words on your pages and in lesson notes are a different job: see the related article on changing wording across a whole course.

Questions people ask

Does fixing captions use my transcription minutes?
No. Nothing is transcribed again - Bernard corrects the words that are already there. It works even when this month’s transcription limit has been reached.
Will the captions still line up with what I say?
Yes. Every caption keeps its exact start and end time; only the words inside it change. The line that highlights in the transcript as you speak keeps its timing too.
Do I approve the change first?
There is no draft to approve here: once you say yes, learners see the corrected words straight away. So Bernard always shows you first - how many places will change and a few of the captions before and after - and changes nothing until you agree.
Can I undo it?
Yes. The old captions are kept. Ask Bernard to undo the last caption correction on that lesson or course and everything goes back as it was, the transcript and its search included.
Will “behavior” also change “behaviors” and “behavioral”?
Not by default - Bernard matches whole words, so it never changes part of a longer word by accident. Give him each form you want changed (behavior, behaviors, behavioral), or ask him to match inside longer words too. A capital letter at the start of a sentence is kept either way.
My course was copied from another one. Is that one fixed too?
Only the course you name is changed. If its videos are also used in another course, Bernard tells you which lessons, and you can ask for the same corrections there.
What about subtitles in other languages?
They stay as they are, because they were translated from the old words. If one matters to you, ask Bernard to translate that language again after the correction.
