Give my students a deadline to finish the course
Some courses have a time limit: finish within seven weeks, hand in your work by a date. bernard keeps that date on each student’s place on the course, so it can remind them before it arrives and so you can see it next to their name.

One rule for the course. Tell Bernard how long students have, for example “49 days after they enrol”. Every new student gets a deadline from that rule when they enrol, and students already on the course get one from the same rule when you set it. A student is due by the end of their day, UK time. The rule can be up to 730 days.
One student’s own date. Give a student a date of their own, or an extension: “give Sarah 14 more days”. A date you set for one student is theirs. Changing the course rule later does not touch it, and you can always put them back on the rule.
What an extension moves. A deadline reminder that has not gone yet moves to match the new date. A reminder that has already gone is never sent again. If you extend late, so that a reminder’s day is already past, that reminder goes within the hour, and Bernard tells you.
See everyone’s dates. Ask “who is on [course name], and when is each of them due?” Bernard lists each student with their deadline, when they last opened the course, the last lesson they finished, and whether their emails are paused.
A deadline does not lock anyone out. It is a date for reminders, and for you.

- Can one student have a different date?
- Yes. Give them their own date, or add days to the one they have. A date you set for one student stays theirs: changing the course rule later does not touch it. You can also put them back on the course rule.
- What happens to their reminder emails when I give an extension?

- No. A deadline is a date for reminders and for you to see. The student keeps their access to the course until their access itself ends.

- A deadline on its own sends nothing, so there is nothing to approve. The reminder emails that use it are part of your course emails, and those only go once you have approved them and switched them on.
