Can I keep my own details on a company, like its sector or a tier?
Say you sort your clients into Gold, Silver and Bronze, or you want each one’s contract renewal date. Company fields are the details you keep on your companies, in your own words.
The prompt
“Add a company field called [field name], type [text/date/number/choice/web address]. Then set it to [value] on [company name].”

Sector, on every company
Every company already has a Sector. It starts with no choices, because the sectors are yours: Rail, Aviation, Private, or whatever you work in. Ask Bernard to add the ones you use, then set them:
Add Rail and Aviation as sectors for my companies. Then set Acme Ltd to Rail.
Sector can be renamed and its choices changed, but it cannot be archived. The Companies tab can filter by it.
Add your own
Ask Bernard for a new field and say what kind it is: text, a number, a date, a web address, or a choice from a list. You can keep up to 50 of your own for the whole account.
The fields work the same way as the details on a person: a choice can be renamed and every company keeps its value, and a choice you retire stays on the companies that already have it but cannot be given to a new one. Can I keep my own details on a contact, like a membership level or a renewal date? explains renaming and retiring in full.
Set them
Open a company from the Companies tab and fill in its Details, or ask Bernard. For more than one company, Bernard first tells you what it will do and waits for your yes.
Where a company stands and who looks after it are not fields. They have their own controls on the company’s page.
Questions people ask
- How many company details can I keep?
- Up to 50 of your own, for your whole account. Sector, which every company has, does not count toward them.
- Can Bernard set a detail on several companies at once?
- Yes, up to 200 companies in one go. For more than one company, Bernard first says exactly what it is about to do and waits for your approval before it changes anything.
- Are company details the same as contact details?
- No. Contact details are kept for each site; company details are kept once for your whole account, because a company belongs to the account. The two lists never mix.
