Mark a student’s lessons complete when they finished offline
Sometimes a student finishes your course offline: in a class, at a workshop, or on the platform you used before. Their progress in bernard then shows lessons they never ticked. Bernard can mark those lessons complete for them, on your word.
The prompt
“[Student’s email] finished [course name] offline. Mark all their lessons complete, then tell me if the course now counts as finished.”

Ask for it in your own words. For example: “Sam finished the baby massage course in person in May. Mark all her lessons complete.” Bernard asks for a short reason if you do not give one, and keeps it with every lesson it marks.
You see it first. Bernard lists the lessons it would mark, the lessons the student already finished, and any lesson it must leave for the student. It also says whether the course would then count as finished. Nothing changes until you approve that list. If a lesson changes before you approve, Bernard shows you a fresh list first.
It is recorded as yours. Each lesson you mark says that you marked it, not the student. A lesson the student finished themselves keeps their own record. If the student later finishes a lesson you marked, it stays recorded as yours. Your student list, course completions and certificates do not yet show which lessons you marked. The record is kept with each lesson’s progress, and Bernard can read it back to you.
Quizzes stay the student’s own. Bernard never passes a quiz for anyone. A lesson whose required quiz the student has not passed is left for them, and passing the quiz ticks it. Until every required quiz is passed, the course does not count as finished, and Bernard names the quiz that is left.
When the course is finished. If your marks finish the course, the emails you have set up for students who finish start, as they would for any student who finished online. To give them their certificate, see Give learners a certificate when they finish my course.
To see where each student is, ask “who is on [course name], and what was the last lesson each of them finished?”
Questions people ask
- Will it look as if the student marked the lessons themselves?
- No. Each lesson you mark is recorded as marked by you, with your reason and the date. A lesson the student already finished keeps their own record, and Bernard never changes it. If the student later finishes a lesson you marked, it stays recorded as your mark.
- Can Bernard pass their quizzes for them?
- No. Quiz results stay the student’s own. A lesson whose required quiz they have not passed is left for them, and passing the quiz ticks it. If a required quiz is not passed, the course does not count as finished yet, and Bernard tells you which quiz is left.
- Do the emails for a finished course go?
- Yes, when your marks finish the course. The emails you have set up for students who finish start, the same as for a student who finished online. If the course already counted as finished, nothing is sent again. The emails for each lesson do not go, so the student does not get every lesson email at once.
- Do they get a certificate?
- Not from this step. Once the course counts as finished, ask Bernard to give them their certificate. Bernard shows you the name it will print before it issues it.
- Can I mark only some lessons?
- Yes. Name the lessons, or ask for all of them. Bernard first shows you which lessons it would mark and which are already done, and marks nothing until you approve the list.
