Does transferring the registration move my website or email?

These use an IPS tag rather than the usual authorization code. Cloudflare says to complete its checkout first, then ask the old registrar to change the tag to CLOUDFLARE. Doing those steps in the wrong order can reject the transfer.

Move my domain registration to Cloudflare

Moving DNS and moving the registration are separate jobs.

DNS decides where the domain's directions are kept.
Registration decides which company renews the domain and holds the registrant details.

An account owner can Connect Cloudflare to bernard without giving it control of my DNS with Zone Read so bernard can check whether this exact domain is visible in the selected Cloudflare account. A DNS migration may later ask separately for DNS Read to compare its records. Neither permission exposes transfer eligibility, permits a transfer or starts a charge.

If your only aim is to point the website at bernard, you probably need neither of these wider moves. The ordinary Connect my own web address (domain) to my site route changes a few records and leaves both DNS hosting and renewal where they are.

Start with the ready-made task

bernard first checks whether the domain already uses Cloudflare nameservers. The check is read-only and changes nothing. If DNS has not moved yet, it stops there and sends you to the separate DNS journey. If DNS is already on Cloudflare, that proves only one prerequisite. Cloudflare's dashboard still decides live eligibility and price, and you still need to account for every service bought from the old provider.

What the transfer changes

After a successful transfer, Cloudflare Registrar sends the renewal bill and holds the registration. Cloudflare says it charges the registry and ICANN cost without adding a markup. The exact price depends on the ending of the domain, and some country-code transfers work differently. Cloudflare's current transfer guide is the source to check before paying.

The transfer does not move:

your bernard website;
your business mailboxes;
a Google Workspace or Microsoft subscription;
another service still supplied by the old company.

So "the old provider is gone" is only true after you have checked that it does nothing else for you.

The Transfer domains button in Cloudflare is the right customer journey once DNS is active and checked. It is not a hidden shortcut that bernard can press: Cloudflare's Registrar API beta does not yet support transfers, so you review the details and approve payment in Cloudflare's dashboard.

Check whether the domain is ready

Cloudflare's transfer page shows which active domains in your account are eligible. A transfer may be blocked when the domain is new, was transferred or had its contact details changed recently, is expired, remains locked, uses an unsupported ending or needs another registry-specific step.

Your Cloudflare account also needs verified contact details and a valid payment method. Do not change the registrant name or email just before starting unless you have checked whether that change creates a transfer lock.

Some companies, including certain site-building and commerce platforms, do not allow nameserver changes while they hold the registration. Cloudflare documents an indirect route through another registrar, but it adds cost, delay and another transfer lock. In that case, leaving the registration where it is may be the simpler decision.

The usual transfer

For many domains, the customer journey is:

Confirm the domain is active on Cloudflare and that the website and email work.
At the old registrar, turn off the transfer lock and request the domain's authorization code.
In Cloudflare's Transfer domains page, review the price, enter the code, check the registrant details and confirm payment.
Read messages from both companies carefully. The old registrar may offer a button to approve the transfer sooner. Do not cancel a transfer you started deliberately.
Wait for Cloudflare to show the registration as complete, then check the renewal date, contact details and automatic-renewal choice.

Transfers can take several days. Keep both accounts accessible until Cloudflare shows completion.

At every stage, the single next action belongs in the provider account that owns it. Authorization codes go only into Cloudflare, and payment details stay inside Cloudflare's checkout. Do not paste either into chat.

The .uk route

For .uk, .co.uk, .org.uk and .me.uk, Cloudflare uses the registry's IPS tag process. There is no usual authorization code. The order matters:

Start the transfer and complete checkout in Cloudflare.
Ask the old registrar to change the IPS tag to CLOUDFLARE.
Wait for Cloudflare to confirm completion.

Cloudflare's UK-domain instructions warn that changing the tag before checkout causes the request to be rejected.

Before cancelling the old account

Test the site and email once more, then read the old provider's products and invoices line by line. Cancel only a service you can name and have proved you no longer use. A registrar transfer ends the old domain-renewal relationship; it does not automatically end hosting, email or another subscription.
