Move my Articulate Storyline or Rise course onto my own site
Articulate makes good courses and then seals them shut. What you publish is a self-contained player: your teaching is in there, but it is one opaque parcel as far as the rest of the web is concerned. Google cannot read a sentence of it. Neither can an AI assistant. Neither can anyone who has not logged in.
Moving it onto your own site turns that parcel back into pages.
What comes across
A published package is more generous than it looks. Inside it are the things that cost you the most to make:
- Your video, one file per slide, in the order you arranged them.
- Your captions, which become the transcript underneath each lesson. This is the part people expect to pay for twice - and do not have to. No speech-to-text runs, because you already wrote the words.
- Your running order, so lesson three stays lesson three.
One course of 54 video lessons came across this way, with every transcript already written by the captions that shipped inside the package.
What gets rebuilt rather than carried
- Knowledge checks and quiz slides. These are interactions that only work inside Articulate's player. The questions come across as questions and are rebuilt as real quizzes with automatic marking (Make my quizzes count towards a certificate, Who marks my quizzes?) - which is more than the sealed version could do, because now you can see who passed.
- Cover images. Articulate's own thumbnails are grabbed from the first frame of each video, which is usually a fade and quite often solid black. New ones get made rather than shipping a wall of black rectangles.
- Branching and custom interactions. Anything that depends on the player's own logic is listed for you rather than silently dropped, so you can decide what it should become.
How it goes
- Publish for web or for an LMS, and send us the output. Whichever you already have is fine. If your course is played on a WordPress site through GrassBlade, read Move my courses off GrassBlade and WordPress first, because your structure and your teaching are in two different places there.
- We read the package and build the course. Lessons in order, video attached, transcripts in place, covers made (Understand how a course is put together).
- You walk it privately. The whole course exists as a draft, and the preview renders the real lesson pages, so you can check every one before anybody else can reach it.
- You decide what it is worth. Price it (Charge once, or sell a year of access), give it away free (Give a course away free to grow my list), or keep it unlisted and enrol people yourself (Enrol a student myself - they paid elsewhere).
The change worth noticing is at the end: your teaching stops being a file people have to be given, and starts being pages people can find.

Questions people ask
- Do I have to re-record or re-transcribe anything?
- No. A published Articulate package already carries your video files, your slide running order and your caption files. The captions are read straight out of the package and become the transcript on each lesson, so the words under your video are the ones you actually wrote. Everything lands as private drafts you approve before anyone can see them.
- What happens to my knowledge checks and quiz slides?
- They do not survive as-is, because they are interactive slides that only run inside Articulate's own player. The questions themselves are not lost - they are rebuilt as real quizzes on your site, with automatic marking, pass marks and retakes, which is more than the original slides did.
- Will my course look like a slideshow trapped in a box?
- No, and this is the main reason to move. Inside Articulate your course is one sealed file that Google cannot read a word of. Rebuilt on your site it becomes real lesson pages with real text, so your teaching can finally be found by search engines and AI assistants.
- Do I need the original Storyline project file?
- No. The published output is enough - the folder or zip you get when you publish for web or for an LMS. If you still have the source project it does no harm to keep it, but the move does not depend on it.
- Can I do this myself?
- Not yet. Reading an Articulate package is done by our team rather than by you in the browser, so you send it over and we run it. You still make every decision about what publishes.
