Who marks my quizzes?
Nobody marks your quizzes. There is no queue, no notification, no evening spent going through submissions. The moment a learner presses submit, the platform marks their answers against the key you set and tells them how they did.
What happens when a learner submits
- Their answers go to bernard - not to their browser's idea of the right answers, because the browser was never told them.
- Each question is marked against your key. A single-choice question is right if they picked your option; a tick-box question is right only if they picked all the right options and none of the wrong ones.
- The score is added up on the weight of the questions, turned into a percentage, and compared with your pass mark (Set the pass mark and how many retakes).
- They see the verdict straight away, and - unless you've turned it off - which answers were right and any feedback you wrote.
It takes about as long as loading a page.
What can't be marked this way
Anything a person has to read: an essay, a reflection, a photograph of their work. A machine can't judge those honestly and bernard doesn't pretend to. If your teaching needs them, keep them as an ordinary lesson holding the instructions, and collect the work however you collect it today - by email, or through a form on your site (Follow up on enquiries automatically).
Courses brought across from another platform follow the same rule: the multiple-choice checks come over as working quizzes, and anything that needed a human marker arrives as a lesson carrying its original instructions (Move my courses off LearnDash or WordPress).
Seeing how people did
Ask. "How are people doing on the safe sleep quiz?" comes back as a list: learner, when they sat it, their score, and whether they passed. Because retakes are unlimited by default, one learner can appear more than once - the best attempt is the one that counts.
It's worth a look after the first dozen learners. A question everybody gets wrong is usually a question that's badly worded, or a lesson that didn't land

Questions people ask
- Do I have to mark anything by hand?
- No, and there's nothing waiting for you to. Marking happens the instant a learner submits, against the answer key you approved. There's no marking queue and no notification asking you to look at something.
- What kinds of question can be marked automatically?
- Multiple-choice ones: pick one option, or pick all the right options. Written answers and file uploads aren't marked, because a machine can't judge them - if your course needs those, keep them as instructions in a lesson and collect the work the way you do now.
- Can I see how learners have done?
- Yes - ask Bernard how people are doing on any quiz and you'll get each learner, when they sat it, their score and whether they passed, newest first. Only finished attempts count; one still open isn't a result yet.
- Could a learner see the answers in the page?
- No. The answer key never leaves bernard - the page a learner loads carries the questions and options only, and the marking is done on our side. Approving a quiz change never publishes the answers with it.
