Move my course off Teachable onto my own site
Teachable holds a course well enough. The friction shows up around it: your students sign in through somebody else's front door, your teaching sits behind a login where nothing can find it, and the website, email and hosting you are paying for there duplicate what you already have.
How your course comes across today
By hand, carefully, from your syllabus. That sounds worse than it is, because a course is at heart a list: lessons in order, each with a video and some words.
- Send your syllabus. Lesson titles in teaching order, each with its video link and its notes. Copy it out of Teachable's curriculum screen if that is easiest.
- The course gets built on your site, in that order, with your wording kept (Understand how a course is put together, Add a lesson to my course).
- You review it privately and set what it costs, or give it away (Charge once, or sell a year of access, Give a course away free to grow my list).
Get your videos down first
If Teachable hosts your video rather than YouTube or Vimeo, download your originals while your account is still open. This is the one piece that gets harder the longer you leave it, and platforms rarely hand back the quality you uploaded.
Videos already on your own YouTube or Vimeo need nothing doing - lessons point at them where they are (Use the videos already on my YouTube or Vimeo).
Reading Teachable directly
Tools that read a course platform straight out of your account, without you assembling anything, are on our roadmap. One exists already for another platform, so this is a road we are actually on rather than a someday.
Teachable has not been done yet, and we would rather say that plainly than let you assume. Ask us where it has got to when you enquire - if it has landed by the time you move, you get it; if not, the syllabus route works today and is not a downgrade in the result, only in the effort.
Your students
Export your student list before you close anything. Their details come across and you enrol them yourself (Enrol a student myself - they paid elsewhere). Subscriptions and payment plans have to start again on your own payment account, which nobody can avoid, so plan a message to those people rather than letting a failed renewal be how they find out (Where the money goes when someone enrols).

- How does my course come across today?
- From your syllabus. You give us your lesson titles in teaching order, each with its video and its notes, and the course is rebuilt faithfully on your own site - same order, same words, your price. It arrives as a private draft you walk through and approve before anything lists.
- Are you building a direct Teachable import?
- Tools to read course platforms directly are on our roadmap, and one is already built for another platform. Teachable has not been done yet. Ask us where it has got to when you enquire - if it has landed by the time you move, you get it, and if not the syllabus route is available today and works.
- What happens to my videos?
- If they live on your own YouTube or Vimeo, lessons point at them exactly as before and nothing needs re-uploading. If Teachable hosts them, download your originals first - do this while your account is still open, because it is the piece you cannot get back afterwards.
- Do my students come with me?
- Their details can, if you export them. Their payment arrangements cannot, on any platform - a card authorised to pay Teachable cannot be handed over, so anyone on a payment plan or subscription re-subscribes with you. One-off buyers you simply enrol.
- Why move at all, if Teachable works?
- Mostly because you are renting the same bundle twice. A course platform is a website, hosting and email wrapped around the teaching, and if your site already lives with bernard you are paying for all of that a second time. The other reason is that everything behind a Teachable login is invisible to search engines.
