Can I send only to people with a certain field, or who opened recently?

What a condition can check

A contact field. Ask for people where a field equals a value (text, choice and web address fields ignore capital letters), where a field is filled in at all, where a date field is before or after a date, or where a number field is more or less than a number. Can I keep my own details on a contact, like a membership level or a renewal date? covers making the field in the first place.

Engagement. Ask for people who opened an email or clicked a link in the last N days, who have NOT opened or NOT clicked in the last N days, or who opened a course in the last N days. N can be 1 to 365, and opens and clicks are kept for a year.

Conditions only ever remove people

However many conditions you add, on top of an audience and its tags, the result can never include somebody who has not said yes to hear from you, or somebody who has unsubscribed. A condition narrows; it never widens.

Opens and clicks need recording switched on

An opened, clicked or “has not opened” condition only works when your site records opens and clicks: your own setting is on, an owner has agreed to the engagement Terms, and bernard has put your site on its list for recording. If any of those is missing, Bernard refuses to save the condition and says plainly which one is missing, rather than saving something that would match nobody. Can I see who opened my email? is the whole story of how recording gets switched on.

“Has not opened in 90 days” only ever counts people whose opens are actually recorded, meaning the people who agreed. Somebody bernard has never watched is never counted as having failed to open, because bernard cannot know that about them. An open that a mail app fetched on its own, such as Apple Mail’s privacy check, is never counted as a real open either.

The count you see is the count that gets the send

The recipient count Bernard quotes when you save the audience is exactly who a campaign made from it will reach. A campaign made from a saved audience keeps its own copy of the conditions from the moment you chose it, so changing the saved audience later never rewrites a campaign you already made. In the campaign editor’s audience picker, you can remove a condition from that one campaign’s copy before you send; adding a condition is done by asking Bernard.

What this cannot do yet

Following up specifically the people who did, or did not, open one particular campaign is not built yet. If you ask for that, Bernard says plainly that it cannot be done rather than building something close and pretending it is the same thing.
