Show a paragraph only to some of my students
One course, two kinds of student. Your Level 4 students have an extended essay; your Level 3 students have a short answer. Your midwives need one extra sentence; everyone else does not. You should not need two sets of emails for that.
The prompt

One email, a paragraph for some. Ask Bernard to add a paragraph “only for Level 4 students” or “only for people who said they are midwives on the intake form”. Bernard writes it as a marked block inside the email. When the email goes, each student sees the paragraphs that are for them, and the others are left out completely.
What can decide it. A paragraph can be shown only to students who:
- are on a course level you name, for example “Level 4”;
- gave a particular answer to a question on one of your forms;
- have a tag;
- have finished a lesson or a module, passed a quiz, passed every required quiz, or finished the course.
Where the level comes from. From the student’s own enrolment first, and otherwise from the level you set on the course. A student with neither sees no level paragraph, rather than the wrong one.
Preview it for one student. Ask Bernard to show you the email as a real student would get it. The preview decides each paragraph for that student, the same way the real email does, so what you see is what they get. A preview for a made-up sample student shows every paragraph, so you can read them all.

Questions people ask
- What can decide who sees a paragraph?
- The student’s course level, an answer they gave on one of your forms, a tag, or what they have done in the course: a lesson, a module or a quiz finished, every required quiz passed, or the course finished.
- Where does the level come from?
- From the student’s own enrolment first, and otherwise from the level you set on the course. If neither has one, a paragraph for a level is not shown.
- What happens to students the paragraph is not for?
- The paragraph is left out of their email completely. The rest of the email is the same for everyone.
- How do I check it before anyone gets it?
- Ask Bernard to preview the email for a student you name. The preview decides each paragraph for that student exactly as the real send would. A preview for a made-up sample student shows every paragraph. Nothing sends until you approve the emails and switch them on.
