Emails that send themselves3 min read

My course emails are not reaching students I enrolled by hand or through ThriveCart

You set up emails that follow your students through a course, and some students get nothing. Usually they are the students you enrolled by hand, or the buyers ThriveCart sent across. This is why, and what you can do about it.

The prompt

“My students on [course name] agreed to course emails when they bought through [ThriveCart, or where they bought]. Record that for this course so its automatic emails reach them.”

Why it happens. bernard emails people only when it has their permission on record. A student who agreed at a bernard checkout, or on one of your bernard forms, is covered. A student you enrolled by hand, or who arrived from ThriveCart or another tool, did agree somewhere else, but bernard did not see it. So your course emails skip them, and the reason you see for each skipped email says so (Why did a student get that email, or not get it?).

What you can do. If your students did agree to course emails when they bought, you can confirm that for the course. Ask Bernard, in your own words, for example: “My students agreed to course emails when they bought through ThriveCart.” Bernard shows you:

  • the course;
  • your exact words, as you wrote them;
  • how many students with access to the course it covers now;
  • that students who enrol on it later are covered too, while it stands;
  • that it covers this course’s automatic emails only, not your campaigns;
  • that anyone who unsubscribes still gets nothing.

Nothing changes until you approve. Only the account owner can confirm it, and Bernard never writes the words for you or confirms it on your behalf. bernard keeps your words, the date and who confirmed it, and every email it sends because of it is marked with them.

What it covers, and what it does not.

  • One course. Each course is confirmed on its own. Another course on the same site still needs its own confirmation.
  • That course’s automatic emails only: the emails that follow students through it (Email my students when they reach each point in my course), and the emails that look after a new student when they are set up for that course. Never your campaigns, your saved audiences or your mailing list.
  • Students with access. A student whose place was refunded, withdrawn or ran out is not covered.
  • Their own choice always wins. An unsubscribe, a bounce or a spam complaint stops their emails. The “on hold” tag still holds them, and nobody gets more than 1 automatic email a day. A student who agrees on one of your bernard forms is covered by their own yes, with or without this.

Only confirm what is true. Say it only if your students really did agree to course emails, for example on your ThriveCart checkout or in your terms of sale. If you are not sure, leave it: they still get the course welcome email with their sign-in link, and they can join your list on one of your bernard forms.

Taking it back. Ask Bernard to withdraw it for that course. It shows you what changes and waits for your approval. From then on the course emails go only to students bernard has its own permission for. Emails already sent stay sent. To change the words, withdraw it and confirm again.

Questions people ask

Why are some students not getting my course emails?
bernard only emails people it has permission for. A student who agreed at a bernard checkout or on one of your bernard forms is covered. A student you enrolled by hand, or who arrived from ThriveCart or another tool, has no permission on record in bernard, so the course emails skip them.
What exactly am I confirming?
That the students of this one course agreed to get course emails from you, for example when they bought through ThriveCart. You say it in your own words, and bernard keeps those words, the date and who confirmed it.
Does it add them to my mailing list or my campaigns?
No. It covers the automatic emails of that one course only. Your campaigns, saved audiences and other courses are unchanged.
What if a student unsubscribes?
They get nothing more. An unsubscribe, a bounce or a spam complaint always wins over your confirmation, and so does the on hold tag.
What about students who enrol later?
They are covered too, for as long as your confirmation stands, while they have access to the course. A refunded or withdrawn student is not.
Do I need to approve anything?
Yes. Bernard shows you your exact words, the course and how many students it covers now, and waits for your approval. Only the account owner can confirm it or withdraw it, and Bernard never confirms it for you.
How do I take it back?
Ask Bernard to withdraw it for that course. It shows you what changes and waits for your approval. From then on the course emails go only to students bernard has its own permission for. Emails already sent stay sent.
