How do I say which company a contact works for?
Say Jo, Sam and Priya all work at Acme. Linking each of them to Acme keeps them together, so you can open Acme and see everyone you know there.
The prompt
“Link [a contact’s name or email, or everyone on my list called [list name]] to the company [company name] on [my site].”
Signed in, Get my prompt fills in your site for you. Otherwise press Copy and fill in the [bracketed] parts. First time? Connect your AI to bernard once: Use your own AI (opens in a new tab).
Each contact can belong to one company, or none. The company has to be in your list of companies first: Can I keep track of the companies we want to work with, and where each one stands? covers adding one.
On a person’s page
Open a person from the Contacts tab. Under Company, start typing the company’s name. The box suggests the companies on your account. Press Save. Clear the box and press Save to unlink them.
If you type a name Bernard does not know, it says so and changes nothing. Add the company first, then link the person.
By asking Bernard
Link jo@acme.co.uk to Acme Ltd.
Link everyone on my Rail Live list to Acme Ltd.
You can name the company by its name or by its web address. For more than one person, Bernard first tells you what it will do and waits for your yes.
See a company’s people
Open the company from the Companies tab. Its People section lists everyone linked to it, across every site on your account. See them in Contacts opens the Contacts list showing only that company’s people on this site.
What it does not do
Bernard never decides someone’s company from their email address. A company’s own details are separate from a person’s: Can I keep my own details on a contact, like a membership level or a renewal date? covers the details you keep on a person, and Can I keep my own details on a company, like its sector or a tier? covers the ones you keep on a company.
Questions people ask
- Can Bernard link many people to one company at once?
- Yes, up to 200 people in one go. For more than one person, Bernard first says exactly what it is about to do and waits for your approval before it changes anything.
- Does Bernard work out the company from someone’s email address?
- No. Bernard never guesses a company from an email address. A person is linked to a company only when you, or your assistant on your say-so, link them.
- What happens to the people if a company is removed?
- They stay in your book with everything they had. They are simply no longer linked to any company.
- Does linking someone email them?
- No. Linking a person to a company sends nothing to anyone and does not change what they agreed to.
