How do I get more from my mailing list, or start one?

Of everything in this section, a mailing list is the audience you truly own. No algorithm sits between you and the people on it. Whether you've got a neglected one or none at all, it's worth your attention.

Wake up a quiet list

A list you've ignored isn't dead — it's a warm audience waiting. Don't apologise for the silence; just show up again with something genuinely useful. One good email to people who already like you beats a hundred cold introductions (How do I make the most of the audience I already have?).

Or start one — with a real reason to join

Nobody signs up to "join my newsletter". They sign up for something worth their while — a useful guide, first pick of new work, a genuinely good regular read. Give them that reason, and make signing up easy on your website.

Emails people actually open

Be useful far more often than you sell. Write in your own voice (How do I use AI to write without sounding like a robot?), keep a rhythm you can hold, and treat the list as people, not a broadcast target. It's a core habit in Your first six weeks: a starter plan.

The prompt

You're my email coach. I'm a [what you do] in [town] serving [who you help]. I [have a list of roughly N people I've neglected / don't have a list yet]. Help me either wake it up or start one: a genuine reason for people to sign up, and a draft of the first email — useful and in my voice, not a sales blast.

The [bracketed] parts are yours to fill in. First time? Connect bernard to your AI over MCP — a one-time setup in bernard → your site → Use your own AI — then paste the prompt above.

Questions people ask

Why bother with email when I have social followers?
Because a mailing list is the one audience you actually own — no algorithm decides who sees it. Followers are rented; subscribers are yours. It's the most durable asset in this whole section.
How do I collect sign-ups?
Give people a real reason to join and make signing up easy on your website. On bernard you can add a sign-up prompt or call to action by asking, and it lands as a draft you approve before it goes live.
