What has Bernard’s work actually achieved?

Your Analytics page tells you what your site is doing. Bernard’s work, at the top of that page, tells you what Bernard’s own work has added, and it is careful not to claim more than it can prove.

The prompt

What it shows

  • Working towards: the goal you chose for Bernard, where it started, and when it is next measured.
  • Bernard may: how much Bernard may do without asking, with Change beside it and a link to everything he looks after.
  • Verified work this month and Waiting for you, each a link to your board.
  • The four numbers from your board for the last 30 days (see Where can I see everything Bernard has found and done?).

Every site starts at Ask me first: every change still waits for your approval, so verified work stays at 0 until you let Bernard do routine work himself.

Results, with an honest label

Each result carries one of three labels.

  • Directly attributed: the result came through Bernard’s own link or checkout. bernard does not yet follow a visitor that far, so for now this line says nothing is directly attributed.
  • Observed afterwards: a number changed after the work, in a stated window, from a named source. For example, “The page /reflux: 40 visits from Google, in the 28 days after the change.” That is what happened, not proof the change caused it.
  • Verified work: Bernard proved the change is live, and no business result is measured yet.

Bernard never writes that he “created” visits or sales from timing alone.

The line about the next level

When work waited for your approval that the next level would have done, the panel says so in one line, for example “At Do the routine things, Bernard would also have done the 2 things that waited for you”. The line is built only from real waiting work. When nothing waited, there is no line.

The monthly record

This month’s record opens a page headed “What Bernard did towards your goal”, in eight parts: your goal, the outcome, verified work, time and decisions returned, what is waiting for you, what did not work, what Bernard deliberately did not do, and next month. Every number is counted from bernard’s records. Time returned uses a deliberately low estimate for each kind of task. Once your site has a goal or a setting for Bernard, each month’s record is kept as it stood when the month ends. You can print any record or save it as a PDF.

Questions people ask

Where is Bernard’s work?
At the top of your site’s Analytics page, above Bernard’s report and your visitor numbers. It is there whether or not visitor numbers are switched on.
What do the result labels mean?
Directly attributed means the result came through Bernard’s own link or checkout, so it is proved. Observed afterwards means a number changed in the stated window after the work, which does not prove the work caused it. Verified work means Bernard proved the change is live, but no business result is measured yet.
Why does it say nothing is directly attributed yet?
Because bernard does not yet follow a visitor from one of Bernard’s links through to an enquiry or a sale. Until it can, Bernard will not claim one. You will still see what changed after the work, labelled Observed afterwards.
Does it tell me what a higher level would have done?
Only when it is true. The line appears when work actually waited for your approval that the next level would have done. If nothing waited, or the next level would still ask you first, there is no line.
Can I print it?
Yes. This month’s record opens from the panel and has a Print or save as PDF button. It shows what Bernard did towards your goal, grouped in eight parts, every number counted rather than estimated.
