Can I show Bernard a screen recording of what’s wrong?

Some problems only show up when things move. A menu that jumps under your mouse, a slider that skips a picture, a panel that opens and then closes again: a screenshot shows one moment, and words take three tries to describe it. A short screen recording shows the whole thing at once.

The prompt

“Here’s a screen recording of [the page or menu]. Watch it and tell me what you see going wrong, second by second, then fix it in my draft.”

Just attach it

Record your screen while the problem happens, then attach the recording to your message in the bernard workshop, the same way you attach a photo. Say in a sentence what you expected: “when I move down from Services, the menu should stay still, but it jumps.”

Bernard watches the recording as a strip of still frames, tells you what it saw and at which second, and then works on the fix in your draft. Nothing goes live until you approve it.

Getting the most from it

  • One problem per recording. Start just before it goes wrong and stop just after.
  • Move slowly over the part that misbehaves, so the moment is easy to find.
  • Say what should happen, not only what does. “It should open underneath Services” tells Bernard what right looks like.

For a still problem - a wrong colour, an overlapping heading - a screenshot is quicker: see Something looks wrong - can I just show it a picture?. If what matters is what someone says in a video, Bernard can write it out for you instead: see Turn a recording into text.

Questions people ask

Can Bernard really watch my video?
It looks at the recording as a sheet of still frames taken at even gaps, and it tells you the second each one came from. It does not hear sound, and it sees motion by comparing one frame with the next, so it can spot a menu that jumps or a panel that opens in the wrong place. For a short moment, it can look again at just those few seconds, frame by frame.
What makes a recording useful?
Keep it short and show one problem: start just before it happens and stop just after. Move the mouse slowly over the part that goes wrong, and say in your message what you expected to happen instead. A 20-second clip of one menu beats two minutes of the whole site.
Will my recording appear on my website?
No. It is stored with your site’s files so Bernard can read it, but no page links to it unless you ask for that. When you are done, ask Bernard to delete it. Any fix that comes out of it lands in your draft, and nothing goes live until you approve it.
Can I see what Bernard looked at?
Yes. The frames it looked at show in the small “What I saw” strip under its reply, so you can check it was looking at the right moment.
