Start a new site from one I already run
You might want a second site that starts where your first one is: a new brand that keeps the same look, a separate site for your workshops, or a fresh start that keeps your best pages. You do not have to rebuild those pages by hand. bernard copies the whole site for you in one step.
The prompt
“This site is a copy of my [other site]. Fix the links to pages that were not copied, change the business name and contact details, and show me the homepage before you change anything else.”
Signed in, Get my prompt fills in your site for you. Otherwise press Copy and fill in the [bracketed] parts. First time? Connect your AI to bernard once: Use your own AI (opens in a new tab).
Before you start
You need room for a second site on your plan. That is a switch you add in your Account, explained in Run a second site on the same account.
The steps
1. Pick the site and name the copy. Go to Account → Add a new site → Copy one of my sites, pick the site to copy and give the new one a name. Your AI cannot do this step for you.
2. Wait for the copy. The new site’s home page shows the progress. It usually takes a minute or two. The site you copied does not change.
3. Read the report and fix the listed links. The report says how much was copied and lists the links that point at pages that were not copied. Ask your AI to fix them, or use the Finish my copied site job in the workshop.
4. Change what makes it a different site. The business name, the contact details, the page titles that search engines show. Copied pages still say what the old site said until you change them.
5. Look at the preview and approve. Nothing is public until you do.
What stays behind
- Shop and course pages. bernard builds those from your products and lessons, so a copied page does not carry them. Courses and lessons have their own copy steps, in Use the same lesson in two of my courses.
- Contacts and emails. Your contact list and your automatic emails are not part of a page, so copying pages does not move them.
- Your domain. The new site gets its own address. Connect a domain to it when you are ready.
- Analytics codes. Pages can carry the tracking codes of the old site. Swap in the new site’s own codes before you publish.
- Approved custom code. Code you approved on the old site needs your approval again on the new one.
To copy one page or a batch of photos between two sites you already run, see Reuse a page or photos from my other site.
Questions people ask
- Can bernard copy my whole site?
- Yes. Go to Account, Add a new site, Copy one of my sites, pick the site and give the new one a name. Every page, stylesheet and photo comes across with your style. The new site waits on a draft until you approve a publish, and the site you copied does not change.
- What does not come across?
- Shop and course pages, because bernard builds those from your products and lessons. Also your contacts, orders, students, analytics, your domain and any custom code you approved. The report on the new site lists what was left behind.
- Can my AI copy the site for me?
- No. Copying makes a new site, and creating a site is something you do yourself in bernard. Once the copy is ready, your AI can fix the links and change the words like on any other site.
- Does it cost extra?
- The new site needs room on your plan, the same as any second site. Your Account shows the price before you add it.
- How long does it take?
- Usually a minute or two. A site with a lot of photos takes longer. The new site’s home page shows the progress and then a short report.
