Can I see which email sent people to my website?
When somebody presses a link in one of your emails and lands on your website, your analytics would normally just see a visitor arrive. It could not tell an email visitor from somebody who typed your address in. So bernard labels the links.
The prompt
“Which of my emails sent people to my website last month? Tell me what my analytics can see from the email links.”

What happens
Every link in your email that points at your own website gets a small label added to the end of its address. It says:
- the visit came from bernard, by email;
- which email: a campaign’s subject, or the kind of automatic email;
- which link: the same name you see in the click table under a sent campaign.
Your reader sees nothing different, and the link goes to the same page.
What it does not do
- It never names the person. The label is about the email, not the reader.
- It leaves links to other websites alone, and links you have already labelled yourself.
- It does not touch the unsubscribe or email preferences links.
Where the visits show
In your website’s analytics, among the places your visitors came from. To see the people who pressed a link, rather than the visits, Who clicked the link in my email? shows the names, for the readers who agreed to their clicks being recorded.
Questions people ask
- Do I have to do anything to label my links?
- No. Every link to your own website, in a campaign or an automatic email, is labelled when the email is built. Links to anyone else’s website are left exactly as you wrote them.
- What do the labels say?
- Four things, in the standard form every analytics tool understands: that the visit came from bernard, by email, which email it was (a campaign’s subject, or the kind of automatic email), and which link in it was pressed. The link’s name is the same one the click table under the campaign uses.
- Do the labels say who clicked?
- No. They name the email and the link, never the person. Your analytics sees that a visit came from your October note, not who made it.
- I already add my own campaign labels to links. Will bernard overwrite them?
- No. A link that already carries labels of its own is left exactly as you wrote it.
- Does the labelling change what I approve?
- No. The labels are added when the email is built, so they are already in the preview you approve, and nothing is sent until you approve it.
- Where do I see the visits?
- In your website’s analytics, under where your visitors came from. Showing those visits next to each campaign inside bernard is planned, and not there yet.
