Looking for a Shopify alternative?Your shop on your own site, and Bernard takes 0% of your sales…
Bernard moves the site you already have into a home where the shop is part of your website, rather than the other way round. Your products follow in one ask. One flat price for the site and the shop, and nothing taken from what you sell.
Something not right with the move? Bernard checks his own work in a real browser and repairs what he can, without being asked. Want something he can’t do yet? Say so. A person reads every request.
Bernard moves your whole site in, yours to try free for 14 days. Nothing to pay until you decide to keep it, and your Shopify site isn’t touched.
Your current site isn’t touched. There’s nothing to lose by trying.

Before and after
Google keeps the score. Here it is.

Getting found
How do I get found?
That’s the real question, and it’s the point of moving. Once your site is in its new home, Bernard has the tools to work on exactly that - for Google, and for AI search.
- Tune any page for search - titles, descriptions, the structured data Google reads - changed in your own words, no plugins.
- The plain-language map of every page written for AI assistants like ChatGPT and Claude.
- He can tell the search engines the moment something changes, and answers “how am I doing?” from Google’s own numbers, and using plain language.
What comes across
- Every page and image of your site, exactly as you published them
- Your products: titles, descriptions, photos, tags, sizes and colours with their own prices, and your collections
- Your product links - an old /products/ address keeps working, so Google and your Instagram links don’t break
- Your web address, in your own name
Said plainly
What stays behind, for now
- Stock counts. Shopify doesn’t publish them, so products arrive with a simple in stock or sold out switch, and sold-out items already marked. Tell Bernard the real numbers for anything you want counted down sale by sale.
- Draft products. Only what is on your shop’s public shelves comes across, so publish anything you want moved before you start, or add it afterwards.
- Your order history. Past orders stay in Shopify, so export them before you close the store.
The whole bill
Shopify Basic against £400 a year, line by line
Shopify’s plan is cheaper than Bernard. The bill isn’t just the plan, though: a cut comes off every sale, and most shops add paid apps. Here is the whole year.
| The yearly bill | Shopify Basic | Bernard, site and shop |
|---|---|---|
| The plan, paid yearly | £228 (£19 a month), or £300 paid monthly | £400 |
| Each online sale | 2% + 25p on Shopify’s own card payments | Stripe’s own card rate. Bernard takes 0% and adds nothing |
| Using an outside payment provider | a further 2% on top of that provider’s own fee | no extra fee |
| Themes and apps | free theme, or paid themes and apps, shop by shop | included |
| The move | your own time, or a paid expert | included |
The honest reading: if you run a free theme with no paid apps and sell only a little, Shopify Basic is cheaper, and you should stay. The flat price wins when the cut on your sales and the apps add up to more than the difference, or when the shop is part of a bigger website.

The site and the shop: £400 a year.
One flat price, and the move is included. Bernard takes 0% of your sales: buyers pay through your own Stripe account at Stripe’s own card rate, and Bernard adds nothing on top. The renewal price is the price you see.
Every buyer lands on your own contact list. Want help marketing as well? Nautilus Medium with the shop is £700 a year: a marketing plan every six weeks, every piece drafted for you, and Bernard drafts your social posts for you to approve.

Questions people ask
- How do I cancel Shopify without losing my shop?
- Move first, cancel second. Bernard moves your site into the new home and you have it free for 14 days. Your products follow in one ask: give Bernard your shop’s address and the catalogue arrives as drafts. Export your order history from Shopify, point your web address at the new site once you are happy, and only then cancel. Keep Shopify open until Bernard has copied your product photos onto your own site, so no picture goes missing.
- What comes across from my Shopify shop?
- Your site moves first, page by page. Then the shop: ask Bernard to bring it across and he reads everything on your shop’s public shelves, so titles, descriptions, photos, tags, sizes and colours with their own prices, ‘was’ prices, sold-out flags and your collections. Old product links keep working. Products arrive as drafts, so you check the prices before anything goes on sale.
- What doesn’t come across?
- Stock counts, draft products and your order history, today. Shopify only shows the world what is on sale, so that is what Bernard can read. Products arrive with an in stock or sold out switch, and you tell Bernard the real numbers for anything you want counted. Export your orders from Shopify before you close it.
- Is Bernard cheaper than Shopify?
- Not on the plan alone. Shopify Basic is £228 a year paid yearly, and Bernard’s site and shop together is £400. The difference is what comes off each sale and what you add: Shopify takes 2% + 25p on each online sale through its own payments, a further 2% if you use an outside provider, and most shops pay for apps. Bernard takes 0% of your sales. A small shop on a free theme with no paid apps is cheaper on Shopify, and we would rather say so.
- Who takes the card payments?
- Your own Stripe account. Buyers pay through Stripe at Stripe’s own card rate, the money goes to you, and Bernard adds nothing on top and never touches it.
- Is there a limit on how many products I can bring?
- Bernard checks your shop when you paste the address and tells you straight away if it’s bigger than he can carry today. Most small shops fit comfortably.
- Where will my site live, and is it safe?
- On Amazon’s cloud, with Cloudflare standing in front - the same serious infrastructure that quietly holds up a good chunk of the internet. Cloudflare keeps a copy of your site cached in cities all over the world, so it loads fast wherever your visitor is and shrugs off a launch-day rush. The people who built Bernard usually build software for banks; they couldn’t switch that careful instinct off.
No more waiting a fortnight for a developer.
