Let people pay for a course or workshop in instalments

A big purchase is easier in parts. Offer the course or workshop at its full price, and also as a few monthly payments, side by side on the same page.

The prompt

“Let people pay for [course or workshop name] in [number] monthly payments of [amount each], as well as [the one-payment price] at once.”

Signed in, Get my prompt fills in your site for you. Otherwise press Copy and fill in the [bracketed] parts. First time? Connect your AI to bernard once: Use your own AI (opens in a new tab).

How it works

  1. Say both ways. “The workshop is £480, or 3 payments of £150.” The parts can add up to less than the full price if that is what you charge; Bernard keeps your figures.
  2. Check the page. Each way has its own button. The part option shows “3 x £150” and says what is paid today and what follows: “£150 today, then £150 a month for 2 more payments.”
  3. Approve. The new option goes live when you say so.

At checkout the buyer reads the same thing beside the pay button, with the total, and that the payments stop after the last one. The money goes to your own Stripe account, as with every sale.

After someone buys

  • Access starts at the first payment and runs from one payment to the next, with a grace period.
  • A missed payment pauses access after the grace period. Nothing is removed: when the payment goes through, access comes back.
  • After the last payment the buyer has the course for its normal length of access, counted from their first payment.
  • A refund of the first payment stops the payments still to come.

On a workshop with a limited number of places, a buyer paying in parts takes a place from their first payment (Limit how many people can buy my workshop or course). Selling a course more than one way is in Sell one course several ways, at different prices, and your whole price list, with each option in parts, is in Show me all my prices in one place.

Questions people ask

When does the buyer get access?
At the first payment. While parts are still to come, access runs from one payment to the next, with a short grace period on top.
What if a payment fails?
Stripe tries again. If it is still not paid after the grace period, access is paused - not removed. When the payment goes through, access comes straight back. The buyer keeps their place on a workshop with a limit.
Do the payments ever stop?
Yes. They stop by themselves after the last part. Once everything is paid, the buyer keeps the course for its normal length of access.
Can buyers use a discount code when paying in parts?
Not yet. Codes work when paying at once. The checkout says so if someone tries.
Does it go live straight away?
No. The new option is drafted privately on the course page and goes live when you approve it.
