Give a few months of my membership with a course
“Buy the £250 version and you get three months of the club free. After that it is £25 a month unless you cancel.” Tell Bernard that, and the course page offers it as one of the ways to buy the course.
The prompt
“Sell [course name] for [price] with [number] months of [membership name] included, then [it carries on at the monthly price unless they cancel / it ends]. Members cancel by [how a member cancels].”

Two kinds
- Months that carry on. The membership starts free and, when the months end, carries on at its price unless the buyer cancels. This is a free trial, so the checkout and the receipt say so plainly: “The club is free for 3 months, then £25 a month unless you cancel”, followed by your own words for how to cancel. Bernard will not sell it without those words.
- Months that end. The buyer gets the membership for the months, then it stops. Nothing more is charged and no card is kept for it.
Either way the buyer gets the course for its full term from the day they pay, and the membership gives everything it normally gives: its courses and any forum rooms (Run a membership or paid community - people pay monthly for my courses).
The rules every buyer reads
The same words appear for everyone before they pay:
- Already a member? The months are added to the end of the time they have paid for (or, if you choose, nothing is added).
- Once per person. Someone who has had free months of that membership before gets the course only.
- A refund ends the free months not yet used.
If a card fails when the free months end, the member gets the normal grace period, then the membership ends. Their course is not affected.
The reminder before the first charge
Stripe sends the reminder, from your own Stripe account, if you switch it on: in your Stripe dashboard, open the Billing settings for subscriptions and emails and turn on the reminder before a free trial ends, with the link to a Stripe-hosted page so people can cancel. Bernard sends nothing about it.
Selling one course several ways is in Sell one course several ways, at different prices, member prices are in Give my members a better price on my courses, and every price you have, months included, is in Show me all my prices in one place.
Questions people ask
- Is the free part a trial?
- Yes, when the months carry on at the membership price. The card is taken at checkout, the checkout and the receipt say when the first charge comes and how to cancel, and nothing is charged for the membership until the free months end. Bernard will not sell it until you have said how a member cancels.
- Does anyone get a reminder before the first charge?
- Stripe can send one 7 days before, from your own Stripe account, with a link to cancel. It is a setting in your Stripe dashboard that you switch on; bernard sends no email about it.
- What if the buyer is already a member?
- By default the months are added to the end of the time they have already paid for, so they pay nothing more until then. You can choose instead that an existing member gets nothing extra. Every buyer reads the rule before paying.
- Can someone buy two courses and get the free months twice?
- No, by default free months of a membership come once per person. A second purchase gives the course only, and the checkout says so before payment.
- What happens on a refund?
- The course is taken away as with any refund, and the free months not yet used end at once. Months already used are not charged for.
- Do I have to approve it?
- Yes. The course page with the new option is drafted privately and goes live only when you approve it, like every page change.
