What is Bernard’s calendar of work?

Your calendar is where Bernard’s plans for the coming weeks sit, beside the chat in Bernard’s Workshop. See How Bernard looks after things for me for what each setting lets him do.

The prompt

“Show me this week on my calendar, and tell me anything that is ready for my yes.”

Where it is

The calendar is the Calendar tab of Bernard’s Workshop. At Ask me first nothing changes: the tab appears once you have planned your weeks. When your setting for the website is Do the routine things or Get on with it, the tab is always there, and it can also earn a place in your sidebar as Your calendar.

Bernard plans and replans on his own only once he has earned that kind of work for your site. Until then you plan by pressing the button on the tab, as before.

What a plan is built from

Bernard plans from the goal you chose, your checklist, and what he has found on your site: the searches Google shows you for but nobody clicks through from, and the problems on his list. When an entry answers one of those, it says so. An entry about writing a page can carry a short brief: the question people search for, who the page is for, what it should answer, and any facts you need to confirm before it goes anywhere.

One entry, several pieces of work

An entry can hold more than one piece of Bernard’s work, for example a page, a post and an email about the same thing. Each piece shows what it is, what Bernard may do with it at your setting, when it is due, and a short check code so you can match what you approve.

The entry’s state comes from its pieces:

  • planned - an idea, nothing prepared yet;
  • ready for your yes - a piece is prepared and waits for you;
  • on hold - a piece is about to happen or is under way;
  • partly done - some pieces are done and checked, others are not;
  • done - every piece is done and checked on your site;
  • needs attention - a piece did not work. The pieces that did work stay listed with their receipts;
  • waved off - you set the entry aside.

Saying yes, and stopping

Press Yes, do it on one piece, or Yes to all ready to approve every piece that is ready for your yes. A piece that is only a suggestion is left alone. If a piece depends on another, for example a link to a new page, it waits until that page is done and checked.

Social posts are the exception: you post those yourself, so they have their own card on the entry with a time and a Schedule button, and Yes to all ready leaves them alone. When a post is due, the entry says Ready to post. What does Bernard do about my social posts? explains the posts, the reminder and the hand-off.

If someone else approves one area of work for your account, only they can say yes to it. Any owner can stop anything. Press stop on a piece, or stop all for the entry. Work that is already under way cannot be stopped, and the calendar says so.

Changing the plan

Move or wave off any entry from the tab, or ask Bernard in the chat. Past days stay as history. When the weeks ahead are replanned, anything you changed yourself, and any entry that holds Bernard’s work, is kept as it is.

Questions people ask

Where do I find my calendar?
In Bernard’s Workshop, on the Calendar tab beside the chat. When your setting for the website is above Ask me first, the tab is always there, and it can also appear in your sidebar as Your calendar. At Ask me first nothing changes: the tab appears once you have made a plan.
What do the states on an entry mean?
Planned is an idea for that day. Ready for your yes means Bernard prepared work that waits for your approval. On hold means work is about to happen or is under way. Partly done means some pieces are done and checked and others are not. Done means every piece is done and checked. Needs attention means a piece did not work. Waved off means you set the entry aside.
Can one entry hold a page, posts and an email?
Yes. Each piece keeps its own state, schedule and receipt. You can approve one piece, or press Yes to all ready to approve every piece that is ready for your yes. Pieces that are only suggestions are left alone, and so are social posts: you approve those with Schedule on their own card, because you post them yourself.
What happens if I change one piece after I approved it?
That piece needs a fresh yes, because what you approved has changed. The other pieces keep the approval you gave them.
Can I stop something on my calendar?
Yes. Stop one piece, or stop the whole entry. Anything already under way is shown as under way, never as stopped.
